Difficult Access

The hard-to-reach jobs are our normal

Some Nelson-Tasman sections just don't have easy access — steep driveways, narrow rights-of-way, tight urban backyards boxed in by fences and neighbouring houses. These are the jobs plenty of contractors turn down. They're what D&R Works specialises in.

We assess access before we assess the job. Right-sized machinery, careful planning, and — when a site genuinely can't be driven into — craning an excavator straight over a house or fence line.

How we work

How we work difficult-access sites

Site & Access Assessment

Before any gear moves, we walk the site and work out exactly how it can be accessed safely and efficiently.

Right-Sized Machinery

Mini excavators and compact gear matched to tight or sloping ground that standard-sized machinery can't reach.

Crane Lift-Ins

When a site genuinely can't be driven into, we arrange a crane lift over a house, fence line or boundary.

Compact excavator wedged between a house and a retaining wall build
Example project

Compact machine working wedged between the house and the bank — no room for anything bigger.

Excavator working a steep, boxed-in backyard right against a house
Example project

Steep backyard cut and prepped hard against the house, right-sized gear throughout.

Common questions

Difficult Access Sites FAQs

What counts as a "difficult access" site?

Steep driveways, narrow rights-of-way, tight backyards, sites boxed in by neighbouring properties — anywhere standard-sized gear can't easily get in or work safely.

Do you need to crane machinery onto site?

Sometimes. If there's no way to drive an excavator in, we can arrange a crane lift over a house or boundary. We'll tell you upfront if your site needs this.

Does difficult access cost more?

It can, depending on what's needed to get gear on site safely. We'll be upfront about this as part of your quote — no surprises.

Can you assess my site before I book anything?

Yes — get in touch with your site details and we'll give you an honest read on access before you commit to anything.
